The Cuban writer Teresa Dovalpage is the winner of the fifth Short Novel Award Rincon de la Victoria. She won the 9000 Euros (12000 dollars) prize with her novel El difunto Fidel (The late Fidel). Encarnacion Anaya, a councilwoman from Rincon de la Victoria commented about “the mastery used for the author in narrating the story, trapping the reader since the first page and using a great sense of humor.” The novel tells the story of a dead man who, through a medium, reveals to two women, (his wife and his lover) how his life really was since the time he left Cuba. The reader travels from Cuba to Canada and Miami, following a gossipy ghost. The jury considered that El difunto Fidel shows a fine irony and an elaborate vocabulary rich in Cuban slang. Dovalpage lives currently in the United States and her novel will be published by Editorial Renacimiento. A total of20181 originals from Spain and Latin America were sent to the contest.
